Leyland U R C

Projects

Leyland United Reformed Church, Lancashire is, in the opinion of the local Planning Department, the only building of architectural quality in Hough Lane, one of the major shopping streets in Leyland town centre.

It is listed as a Building of Architectural or Historical Interest (Grade II), largely on account of its striking appearance. This does not prevent all alterations, but does require a high standard of workmanship and design so that the architectural quality of the building is not lost.

Over several years I have worked with the Church to improve its accessibility and internal facilities. The building is on sloping ground which falls away to the rear of the site, with the result that there are no less than five different floor levels. This made access through the building difficult for people with mobility difficulties, even after they had negotiated the front steps.

The first phase of work was to re-grade the path to the main entrance. Taking advantage of the extensive grounds the path was raised to cover the existing steps, and re-surfaced in resin-bound gravel. The gradient is so slight that it is now possible to enter the building without the unattractive ramps and steps which can easily disfigure the entrances to public buildings.

Access to the war memorial was improved at the same time.

A ramps and steps were then provided to a side entrance, which serves the Church Hall at a lower floor level. This was constructed in common brickwork similar to the existing Church Hall.

Internally a platform lift is to be installed to link the Church and the Hall. Internal ramps have already been installed where practicable.

The final phase of work, to be carried out in May 2009, will be reconstruction of the toilets, including a fully accessible WC.

This ongoing project is typical of the small-scale but detailed work I handle for many clients - especially Charities, Churches and Community Groups - who have to struggle with outdated buildings and limited funding.
